Referee Finder inside the system you built
Connect through our API at three levels: results in your system, one click into Prophy, and the selection back in your system.

Send the manuscript
One API call with the file, title, abstract and authors.
Results in your system
Ranked candidates come back in the same response, ready to show in your own interface.
One click into Prophy
A go-to-Prophy button signs the editor in and opens the manuscript in Referee Finder, with no separate registration.
The selection comes back
Referees an editor marks in Prophy reach your system by webhook within 10 seconds.
In every response
Every candidate arrives with the evidence behind the pick
Prophy matches each manuscript against 60M+ author profiles. An editor deciding whom to invite needs more than a name, so for each candidate the API returns:
- A relevance score and the evidence behind it. Up to five of the candidate's own articles matched against your manuscript, and the concepts that make them relevant, so your interface can show why this person fits.
- Conflicts flagged before the invitation goes out. Co-authorship and shared-affiliation conflicts are marked on each candidate, along with any retracted articles and any of their articles your manuscript cites. If you hold your own conflict-of-interest data, upload it and it comes back on the candidate.
- Your own IDs, echoed back. Your manuscript ID returns with the results, and so do the IDs of reviewers you uploaded in an author group. Your system matches records on its own identifiers, not on email or name.
- 2024Soil degradation drivers across Mediterranean agro-forest districts: a transdisciplinary assessment
- 2022Land-use change under varying ecological regimes and its influence on landscape stability
- 2019Long-term grazing management and its impact on semi-arid cropland resilience
Put your own reviewers first
Upload your existing reviewers as an author group.
Group members are marked on each candidate the API returns and ranked a little higher, because a reviewer who has already reviewed for you is more likely to accept again.
Import a CSV or Excel file with column mapping, or update the group through the API, for example on a daily schedule.
For developers
For the developers who build it
Many of our clients run their own editorial management systems, and they have integrated with us. The API behind those integrations is deliberately stable and backwards compatible. We hold ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification.
- Basic filters in the API, advanced filters in Prophy. Set h-index, academic age and article-count limits on the request. The richer filters stay in Prophy, at level 2, which keeps the API narrow and stable.
- Test before you go live. Build against a test folder, or ask us about a separate test organization with its own API keys. Two keys can be active at once, so you can rotate them.
- Webhook logs you can read. Admins manage API keys, set webhook URLs and read webhook logs on the integrations dashboard in Prophy. Each webhook URL has its own key.
- One key per client, for vendors. If you sell an editorial system to many organizations, each client gets its own API key, so access and data stay isolated per organization.
- Developers who answer. Prophy's developers answer questions from yours.

The full view
The full Referee Finder view, one click away
At level 2, the go-to-Prophy button in your own system takes the editor into Referee Finder itself. That opens the complete candidate list for the manuscript, with everything an editor needs to refine it.
- Conflict checks you can see. Co-authorship and shared affiliations are flagged against the manuscript's authors (the last five years by default, adjustable), and so are retracted articles.
- Filters editors use. h-index, academic age, article count, journal impact factor, countries, and concept groups you can boost or ignore.
- Your own reviewer pool. Upload your reviewer database as an author group to search within it or highlight its members, and save the settings you reuse.
Change gender, location, experience level, and broadness of expertise of proposed referees.
Or use a ready-made integration
Prophy's Referee Finder already runs inside ScholarOne Manuscripts, Aries Editorial Manager and eJournalPress.
Questions editors ask
Do our editors need Prophy accounts?
No registration. At level 1, editors stay in your system. At level 2, your system signs them in with a JWT, and the account and access to the manuscript are set up automatically.
How is manuscript data handled, and do you train on it?
Your data belongs to you, and you can delete it at any time or set up lifecycle rules. We also don't train any models on your data.
Do we have to build all three levels?
No. Each level can be built on its own. The most common starting point is the first: results in your own system.
Is this the same Referee Finder as the standalone tool?
Yes. It is the same Referee Finder and the same matching engine, available inside your own system through our API.
Can a grant management system use it?
Yes. A folder can be a grant panel, and access to a manuscript can be limited to the duration of a call. Talk to us about your setup.
